Quince Orchard Web Team
School Year 2004-2005
Mr. Leveille
Hi. I'm Mr. Leveille and I am a computer teacher at Quince Orchard High School. I teach C++, Web Design, and Software Applications. I am currently in a Computer Science Masters program at Hood College in Frederick and I'm up to my neck in Java. In May of last year I started working on the redesign to qohs.org and it was a ton of work. What I learned during the process though definitely made the hard work worth it. My knowledge as far as web design goes includes CSS, PHP, MySql, XML, Javascript, VBScript, (x) html compliancy, and a lot of little other things. I really enjoy being the web master for our site(s). If you have any questions about the sites or about joining the web team you can contact us and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.
Stephen Eskin (Junior)
Stephen is almost entirely responsible for all the code in the http://www.qoalumni.org pages. He has spent over 150 hours on the development of the alumni database which houses the registered Quince Orchard Alumni members, the integration of the alumni site registration and user authentication system, the creation of the alumni site news system, etc, etc. He is a strong web programmer with experience in PHP, MySQL, Javascript, VBScript, (x) html and CSS. His ability to pick up new technologies is astounding...his brain is a sponge when it comes to computers and computer logic...
Justin Parks (Senior)
Justin has taken just about every computer course we offer here at Quince Orchard High School. Among the courses he has taken include: Discovering Programming Concepts, Programming 1, AP Programming 2 and 3, Digital Art, and Advanced Studio Web Design. As is evident by the courses he has taken, Justin is a strong programmer. He has some experience programming with DirectX and the WinAPI's. On the Web Team, Justin has helped in the testing of the alumni site and its pages. He has also done a lot of graphic work for pages in the regular qohs.org domain...
Our 2004-2005 Projects
Quince Orchard High School - May 2004
http://www.qohs.org/
A very time consuming and labor intensive project, the web team was tasked in May of 2004 with the job of moving data from the old Quince Orchard Site to a new site. The goal was to have a new site ready to go by mid October. The web team met this goal through a lot of hard work over the summer of 2004. Among the challenges within this site include it's use of advanced CSS techniques, and it's strict adherence to rules for good (x) html mark-up. Although there are over 100 pages in the site, the web team makes every effort to ensure that each page is accessible to people with certain disabilities (more info). Each page in the site contains dynamic components created through the use of a web programming language called PHP. If you see something that could be improved upon contact the web team and let us know.
Quince Orchard Alumni - September 2004
http://www.qoalumni.org/
Towards the end of the summer of 2004 the web team started throwing around ideas for an alumni section to the qohs.org site...one that would authenticate users and protect user information. Around the middle of September we started working on a user interface and system by which we could register and authenticate users. After only a month of planning and design work (early November 2004) the web team launched http://www.qoalumni.org/. Within 24 hours over 100 alumni members had registered for accounts in the new system and after only 2 weeks nearly 500 alumni members had registered. The plan for this project is to roll out stronger versions with better feature sets every so often. Register for an account as a friend of the school if you would like. Check it out.
QOHS Content Management System: January - May 2005
There were many instances throughout the year when updating basic content on the site became very tedious. So, we decided to create our own simplified content management system. Our content management system gives us the ability to manage news, announcements, staff data, the principal's corner, etc. As a result of this system we have really cut down on the time it takes to get data to the front page of our site. We've also set up dynamic generation of multiple RSS feeds for those folks who want our data delivered to a news feed reader. We continue to make improvements to this system daily. And yes, we borrowed icons from Microsoft (and elsewhere). Only we should ever see them though, so we hope it really doesn't matter.
